Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah — Bukit Kayu Hitam ICD Sdn. Bhd. (BKH ICD)’s management team had the distinct honour of hosting Malaysia’s Second Finance Minister, YB Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, during his recent working visit to the newly completed BKH Inland Customs Depot (ICD) and Free Commercial Zone (FCZ). He was accompanied by Datuk Dr. Shahrazat Haji Ahmad, Deputy Secretary General of Treasury (Investment) of Ministry of Finance and Chairman of Northern Gateway together with Dato’ Haji Mohd Fauzi Mustaffa, Deputy State Secretary (Development) of Kedah State Government – hosted by BKH ICD’s Chairman Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Mohamed Tarmizi, Dato’ Seri Dr. Michael Tio, Group Chief Executive and Managing Director of PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd, Mr. Razwin Sulairee Hasnan Termizi, CEO of Northern Gateway Sdn Bhd and Kuan Eu Jin, Chief Revenue Officer of PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd.
This visit marks a significant milestone, showcasing the operational readiness of BKH ICD’s world-class inland port and free commercial zone, designed to enhance Malaysia’s logistics and transportation sector. Strategically positioned adjacent to the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration Customs Quarantine Security Complex (BKH ICQS), this 50-acre development sits along the North-South Expressway, also designated as Asian Highway 2 (AH2)—Malaysia’s key route for the ASEAN Customs Transit System (ACTS). Through ACTS, BKH ICD facilitates seamless duty-free trucking across borders, linking Singapore to Vietnam and onwards to China.
Established as a joint venture on December 3, 2019, Bukit Kayu Hitam ICD Sdn Bhd unites two leading entities: One Northern Hub Sdn Bhd, fully owned subsidiary of PKT Logistics Group Sdn. Bhd., holding a 60% share, and Northern Gateway Logistics Sdn. Bhd. (NGL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Northern Gateway Sdn. Bhd. (NGX), with a 40% stake.
The inland port’s phased development consists of four distinct segments. Phase 1, the BKH Inland Port, spans 12.4 acres and features a Customs Office Complex covering 19,775 square feet. Phase 2, the BKH Free Commercial Zone (Blackwood Forests), encompasses 9.3 acres and is home to four high-capacity warehouses—Summer, Spring, Autumn, and Winter—collectively offering nearly 200,000 square feet of storage space. Future phases will introduce parking, fuelling, and EV charging stations, followed by the Blackwood Complex, an integrated hub for office space, education, retail, and hospitality.

Since breaking ground in early 2022, BKH ICD has achieved several key milestones. Full regulatory approvals were secured in early 2025, paving the way for operational readiness from April 8, 2025. The Free Commercial Zone was officially launched on June 1, 2025, reinforcing its role as a vital trade enabler.
Operational efficiency is a core pillar of BKH ICD’s success. The facility operates seven days a week, from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with a handling capacity of 250,000 TEUs annually. Equipped with advanced stacking slots for dry and refrigerated containers, the port targets a productivity rate exceeding 10 moves per hour. Cutting-edge infrastructure, including flexible entry-exit lanes and a next-generation terminal operating system, ensures smooth logistics management.
In alignment with sustainability goals, BKH ICD received GreenRE Gold Certification in March 2025. The facility integrates energy-efficient lighting, water conservation measures, and AI-driven flood lighting management, reducing its carbon footprint while optimising operations. BKH ICD also appointed University Malaysia Perlis to deploy AI to control flood lighting for the Inland Port to reduce energy consumption.
Looking ahead, BKH ICD remains dedicated to fostering collaboration and innovation within the logistics sector. Recent Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) signed with Penang Port Sdn Bhd and City Zone Express Sdn Bhd (a Kuehne & Nagel company) underscore its commitment to seamless trade facilitation and data-driven operational enhancements.
With its strategic positioning, cutting-edge infrastructure, and dedication to sustainability, Bukit Kayu Hitam ICD is set to redefine Malaysia’s logistics landscape, enabling efficient cross-border trade while strengthening regional connectivity.
