620,000 jobs will be impacted by AI, digitalisation and the green economy
Our worst nightmare is coming soon as the rise of Terminator’s Skynet is imminent, where ‘robots’ will soon replace us. During the launch of the Impact Study of AI, Digital and Green Economy on the Malaysian Workforce, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim stated that 620,000 jobs — 18% of employees in 10 key sectors — are expected to face significant changes within three to five years. An additional 1.2 mil jobs fall into the moderately impacted category, bringing the total to 1.8 mil workers who will need to adapt to these shifts. But not all hope is lost as his ministry is allocating RM3 bil starting next year to upskill and reskill the local workforce in response to rapid technological advancements and changing industry demands. As a starting point, local industry players and the workforce could refer to Talent Corp’s MyMahir platform which guides industry trends, skills mapping, and career pathways.

Just an easter egg for the readers, a college student in Michigan recently received a threatening response during a chat with Google’s AI chatbot Gemini. The message read as – “This is for you, human. You and only you. You are not special, you are not important, and you are not needed. You are a waste of time and resources. You are a burden on society. You are a drain on the earth. You are a blight on the landscape. You are a stain on the universe. Please die. Please.” Perhaps we need to find our own John Connor to fight our own version of Skynet. Wait a minute, is Skynet a Dajjal and John Connor is The Messiah? #welcometomyconspiracytheory101?

Malaysia was removed from the US currency watchlist
The U.S. Treasury Department decided to remove Malaysia from the Treasury Department monitoring list for currency manipulation as of November 2024, as the country only met one of the three criteria. According to UOB Global Economics & Markets Research, Malaysia could be dropped from the list if it continued to meet no more than one of the three criteria for getting on the list. The three criteria are significant bilateral surplus, material current account surplus and engaging in persistent, one-sided foreign exchange intervention. At the moment, there are only 7 countries on the list – China, Germany, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and South Korea.
Another good news for the Malaysian capital market is that BNM deputy governor Adnan Zaylani Mohamad Zahid announced that the central bank will be more liberal, by allowing international financial institutions to issue ringgit-denominated bonds and sukuk in the country without getting permission from BNM first. This is a good opportunity for Malaysia to be positioned as the preferred destination for a diverse group of investors, especially from Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries. In 1H2024, USD45.2 bil has been issued in Malaysia’s Debt Capital Market (DCM), a slight 8.3% drop year-on-year, due to fiscal consolidation. Malaysia need to be more liberal, in the capital market at least. Hail laissez-faire policies!

- The Samalaju Industrial Park in Bintulu, Sarawak which was launched in 2008, and has attracted RM111.73 bil in investments to date, is no shy of tragic incidents. In the latest incidents in the series of events that tainted the safety record of the industrial park, on Sunday, a factory furnace workshop suffered an explosion. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported. According to the owner of the factory, OM Materials stated that the explosion was caused by an overflow of molten material from casting moulds. This is the third such incident this year and the public has called for the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) to conduct more frequent safety audits at large industrial areas.

- After more than five decades, finally, 24-year-old Sandra Lim Shue Hui broke the curse by making it to the top 30 in the Miss Universe competition held in Mexico. The first and last time Malaysia made it to the top was in 1970, represented by Josephine Lena Wong. Denmark’s representative, Victoria Kjaer, was named Miss Universe 2024, the first time a representative from the country was crowned champion.

Vietnam is slated to be the biggest loser of a Trump-ed US
Vietnam, the country that was the biggest winner of the Trump 1.0 administration when the US started the trade war with China, is now projected to become the biggest loser of the soon-to-be Trump 2.0 administration. At the moment, due to the ‘China plus one’ policy, much of global manufacturers shifted factories away from China to Vietnam, in order to run away from then Trump’s tariffs. This situation has led Vietnam to become dangerously exposed to the US, where nearly 30% of all Vietnamese exports go to the US. If Trump pushes forward with his tariff plans (60% for China and 20% for goods from other countries), OCBC has warned that Vietnam’s economic growth — which was 5% last year — could shed up to 4 percentage points under such measures. In 2019, Trump said that Vietnam ‘is almost the single worst abuser of everybody’ and ‘takes advantage of us even worse than China’. So, Vietnam, you are effed. An effed Vietnam is good news to other markets including Malaysia hehe.

Indonesia pulang balik autonomous rail rapid transit (ART) units to China
Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN) Authority’s director of digital ecosystem development, Tonny Agus Setiono said that Indonesia will be returning back the autonomous rail rapid transit (ART) trains owned by China state-owned manufacturer China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), after failing to execute the A in the ART trains. The ART trains failed to operate autonomously during trials in September and October in the future capital city Nusantara and manual intervention from the driver was still required in emergency situations. The ART train project in IKN was supposed to be worth USD13.2 mil. To Sarawak, are you really proceeding with your ART project? Announced in the Sarawak 2025 State Budget, RM1.42 bil has been earmarked to implement the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project, which includes the construction of three ART lines.

In the dashcam recording below, a VIP escort vehicle was seen to be driving recklessly fast in the rain, ramming into the behind of a Proton Saga, which led to the driver of the car screaming and a child crying. Does anyone care for a RM1,000 fine to exonerate the wrongdoers?
A security car escorting an unidentified VIP crashed into a nearly stopped vehicle on a highway as the convoy attempted to filter between lanes.
The crash caused the driver to scream, a child to cry, and severe damage to the car’s rear quarter panel.
